Legislative Update

Supervisor Kim Stands Up For Our Schools!
Supervisor Kim Sounds Alarm Bell On Graduation Numbers, Stands Up For Our Schools

SF Schools Are Our Schools : Sup Kim Wants High-Schoolers To Graduate
Today, the Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to appropriate $2.7 million from the City's untouched state reserves to the San Francisco Unified School District, to help jumpstart a credit recovery program aimed at helping the nearly half of the current junior class to meet the district's graduation requirements.  The funding would go toward afterschool and Saturday school academic programming, with targeted support for some of the most at-risk high schoolers, most of whom are English language learners.

From the SF Examiner :
"(Supervisor) Kim noted that the district is facing deeper cuts in the next two years, calling now the time to act. This year, The City decreased its contribution into the voter-approved Proposition H, which provides funding for arts education, by 20 percent. Under that measure, The City can decrease such funding during fiscal crises.  “The City is doing quite well,” Kim said. “I don’t think we fully understood the size of our budget when we pulled the trigger and decreased Prop. H funding. We were expecting a deficit.”"

Prop C Passes - Push For More Affordable Housing
On November 6th, San Francisco voters approved Proposition C by a 2-1 margin, allowing the City to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which will subsidize low- and moderate-income housing developments.  The City is looking forward to having $20 million in initial funds by next year, though the 30-year program is projected to provide nearly $51 million a year.  It was a significant victory for our communities, and we thank you for voting on Election Day!

Supervisor Kim breaks ground on new Boedekker Park
Supervisor Kim breaks ground on Tenderloin neighborhood park

It's official!  Construction has started on a bold new renovation of our beloved Boedekker Park in the Tenderloin.  Thanks to $8.5 million in public and private funding, including efforts spearheaded by our office, Boedekker will be receiving a new clubhouse, playground equipment and a more accessible layout.  The park will be temporarily closed during the renovations, but is slated to re-open in 2014.  We're excited to see the project finally funded and breaking ground!

Tenderloin Community Working Together On Food Justice Campaign
Residents gather at 201 Turk to review new data on access to healthy food in Tenderloin.

Over 50 residents gathered on Monday to review data recently collected by the Tenderloin Healthy Corner Store Coalition that pointed to the need to incentivize neighborhood liquor stores and corner markets to provide greater access to fresh produce, as well as reduced alcohol and tobacco offerings.  The Tenderloin is a food desert, meaning that affordable access to healthy and nutritional food is limited, particularly because the Tenderloin is the only neighborhood without a full-service grocery store.  Out of the 650 residents Tenderloin residents surveyed by the coalition, less than 1/4 of the residents said they were able to purchase dairy, grains or protein in the neighborhood, and only 1/3 said they were able to purchase produce.  More than 80% said they would purchase their groceries at a corner store if they could get healthier food at an affordable price.

Spain Rodriguez passed away last Wednesday at the age of 72 after a celebrated career as the founder of Zap Comix and a leader in the underground comix counterculture .  His work honored the eccentric underdog, the poor and the disenfranchised and one of his most popular comic series, "The Dark Hotel", took place in the Tenderloin district.  Spain most recently taught art at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, and is survived by his wife, daughter and sister.  Read local author David Talbot's moving tribute here : Salon.com
