1. Call to Order and Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 5:16 p.m. Commissioners present: Huynh, Persky, and Shackelford. Commissioners absent: Covington, Armstrong. Staff present: Phimy Truong. There was quorum.
2. Approval of Agenda (Action Item)
There was no public comment. Commissioner Persky, seconded by Commissioner Shackelford, moved to approve the agenda. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.
3. Approval of Minutes (Action Item)
A. January 8, 2013
There was no public comment.
Commissioner Shackelford, seconded by Commissioner Persky, moved to approve the minutes to the meeting of January 8, 2013. This motion was approved unanimously by acclamation.
4. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda (Discussion Only)
There were none.
5. Business (All Items to Follow Discussion and Possible Action)
A. Work on committee priorities
Commissioner Huynh explained to her colleagues that she would like to have a working meeting where members can spend time exploring committee priorities. Commissioner Huynh reviewed the topics that commissioners were interested in exploring:
• Research MYEEP’s piloting of non-core class school credits for students participating in youth employment programs – emailing program staff, listing goals and questions, (Christine)
• Looking at last Youth Vote data on youth employment (Persky)
• Read more about local hire ordinance
• Youth employment focus groups/survey
• Exploring veteran’s employment
6. Items to Report to Executive Committee (Discussion Only)
Commissioner Huynh agreed to update the Executive Committee on the status of the employment committee’s work.
7. Executive Committee Report (Discussion Only)
Commissioner Persky reminded colleagues that the next Executive Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Commissioner Huynh updated her peers on the Bay Area YC summit planning meeting. The planning meeting was hosted at the Oakland Youth Commission’s office on Friday, January 18th. Commissioners put together a draft agenda of the day of the summit, and now need to research who to invite to be guest speakers and presenters in the breakout sessions. Commissioner Huynh requested that they check their emails and follow up on their specific asks.
